How Custom Fingerprint Jewelry Is Made: A Step-by-Step Guide

There are a lot of ways to personalize jewelry. An engraved date. A birthstone. An initial.

A fingerprint is different.

It's uniquely yours. No one else has ever had it. No one ever will.

Your child's. Your partner's. Your parent's. Your dog's. Or someone whose memory you want to carry with you. A fingerprint captures something that can never be recreated.

"How does fingerprint jewelry actually work?"

I get this question all the time.

If you've been wondering how custom fingerprint jewelry is made, here's exactly what to expect from the moment you order your Impression Kit to the day you receive your finished piece.

Step 1: Choose Your Impression Kit

Every custom fingerprint piece begins with an Impression Kit. It lets you capture the print from home.

When you order, you'll choose:

  • Charm size: Baby, Mini, or Classic
  • Metal: Solid 14k Gold, Sterling Silver, Gold Vermeil, or Bronze

Here's the advice I give almost every client ... choose the size based on the person who'll wear it, not the size of the fingerprint. A delicate necklace calls for something smaller. A statement necklace or bracelet can hold something with more presence.

Buying this as a gift? Give the kit, not the finished jewelry. Capturing the print together often becomes the most meaningful part of the whole thing. The experience is part of the gift.

Step 2: Capture the Print

This is the part people worry about most. It shouldn't be.

Soften the wax. Press the fingerprint in. Make two impressions... one primary, one backup, in case anything happens along the way.

There's no pressure to get it perfect the first try. Don't love it? Warm the wax and press again. No penalties for do-overs. One thing to remember: what you see in wax is exactly what you'll see in metal.

I've watched grown daughters laugh like little girls while capturing fingerprints with their moms. That's the part you don't expect going in.

A few things I've learned along the way:

  • Babies usually have well-developed prints by around 12 months.
  • Older hands can be fainter. Try another finger, a knuckle, even a palm.
  • Pet noses and paw prints make beautiful keepsakes too. Flatten the wax slightly first for a nose print.
  • Your phone flashlight is a good way to check the detail, both the overall shape and the fingerprints, before you mail it back.

Step 3: Send It Back to Me

Once you're happy with your impressions, return them to the studio with the Fulfillment Form.

This is where the real collaboration starts.

Some clients arrive knowing exactly what they want. Others just know they want to hold onto a person, or a moment, and aren't sure yet how they want to wear their story. Necklace, bracelet, charm, layered. We'll design it together.

Some come in with a clear vision. Others simply know they don't want to forget this season of life. I love helping both.

Need a little help? You can always schedule a Consultation Appointment. Whether you'd like help capturing the fingerprint or deciding how to wear your finished charm, I'm happy to guide you through it.

Step 4: I Cast and Fabricate Your Piece

When your impressions arrive, I get to work using the traditional lost-wax casting process. Every fingerprint charm is individually cast, finished by hand, and inspected before it leaves my studio.

From there, it can be personalized with engraving, birthstones, a custom chain, or built into a full custom commission. No two projects look the same. No two stories do either.

How Long Does It Take?

Impression Kits ship in 1 to 3 business days, or you can pick one up at either studio location in Matthews, NC.

Once I have your completed impressions, most pieces are finished in 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the design and the season. Every piece is cast and finished by hand.

Good work takes time. I think it's worth the wait, and I think you will too.

More Than Jewelry

People ask me what my favorite fingerprint project has been. I can't pick just one.

One family gave an Impression Kit as a Mother's Day gift instead of finished jewelry. Mom and her three daughters spent the afternoon capturing prints together. Together, we designed a bracelet with each daughter's fingerprint, arranged in birth order, and engraved with their initials.

She didn't just receive a bracelet. She received an experience. And, her finished bracelet will forever recall that moment in time.

Another client wanted to honor both of her parents. Her mother pressed a fresh print into the wax from the kit. Her late father's print was recreated from a digital image, then laser engraved on the reverse of the charm. Her mother now wears the charm, both prints on one charm necklace, and eventually it will be passed to her daughter to wear in remembrance of them both.

What I'm making isn't just jewelry. It's a way to keep the people who love and shape us close. Long after the moment has passed, that fingerprint becomes something you can hold, wear, and eventually hand down.

What Makes Peterson MADE Different

There are plenty of places that can personalize jewelry.  But fingerprint jewelry isn't about placing an order. It's about preserving and honoring your story.

Studio visit, phone call, or email... no matter how we meet, I want the experience to feel as personal as the piece itself.

Some clients arrive with a full vision. Others just know they want to hold onto something. Either way, I'll walk you through it, so the finished piece reflects your story, not a one-size-fits-all template.

A Few Questions I Hear Often

Can fingerprint jewelry be made for babies?

Yes. Like in all other areas, babies develop at their own pace - most babies have prints detailed enough by around 12 months.

Can I use a pet's paw or nose print?

Absolutely. Both make beautiful keepsakes. *the image above is a kitty's nose print!

What if I don't get a good impression?

No problem. Warm the wax and try again. Most people get more comfortable with the process after the first impression, and there's no limit to the number of do-overs

Can fingerprint jewelry be made after someone has passed away?

Often, yes. Prints captured from hospitals, funeral homes, or digital images can be used. If you're not sure what's possible, reach out. I'm happy to talk through your options.

Can I add more fingerprint charms later?

Absolutely. Many families start with one charm and add more over the years... new children, anniversaries, milestones.

Ready to Begin?

Every fingerprint tells a story. Some celebrate a new beginning. Some honor a lifetime. Some just remind us of the people we love most.

Wherever yours begins, it starts with an Impression Kit. From there, I'll walk you through every step, from capturing the print to holding the finished piece in your hands.
